Nigeria has been ranked 187th among 191 countries by the World Health Organisation (WHO, 2000) because of its health care indices. Successive governments and companies (Private and Public) in Nigeria have battled with improving the health status of their populace since independence in 1960. The main problem has been the financing of health care delivery in an affordable, acceptable and equitable manner.
From 1962 through 1999, Health Insurance was proposed on several occasions as an option to health care financing in Nigeria. Some private companies initiated health insurance schemes that covered at best the oil companies and some companies of high standing. Click here for more
